Custom Designed Jewelry
There are literally thousands of companies worldwide that manufacture jewelry. Selecting from the wide variety of ready-made jewelry is quite easy. This is the way most people buy jewelry as a gift or for themselves. Every once in a while, an occasion arises when something one-of-a-kind is called for. It may be a very special gift, or just that the customer doesn't find exactly what he or she is looking for. At Fincher & Ozment Jewelers, we offer custom jewelry design. We will work directly with you to create the piece of jewelry that is exactly what you want, suiting your tastes, and lifestyle.
  • I. Consultations
The most important aspect of designing a piece of jewelry is in the rapport between you and Tommy Ozment. During the first consultation with Tommy, it is important for you to bring in any ideas, pictures, or sketches that give him an idea of your style. Also, bring in any Gemstones or gold that you want incorporated into the new piece. you can also walk around the store and point out particular styles, stones or colors that you like, and together with Tommy come to an understanding of what the special piece will be.
  • II. Sketching
After the initial consultations, We will draw sketches of the ideas you have and what you want. Generally, we will draw four or five sketches of a piece showing several angles and textures. In this process, We have to keep in mind factors such as ultimate size, weight, and strength. The piece we design must function well, be safe when worn, and naturally look great. After the sketches are complete, you can view them and choose the one you want to have made. Sometimes, you may find certain parts of several sketches you like, and a new sketch will be done to combine these parts. The consultation process continues until you are completely satisfied with a sketch.
  • III. Wax model
We begin the creation of the piece by producing a hand carved wax model of the piece. This model is a three-dimensional sculpture that brings the sketch to life and shows the exact dimensions and textures of the ring. The wax used is able to hold the most intricate details and elaborate twists and turns that one can devise. The wax is not only a realistic model for the client, but the starting point for the creation of the actual piece of jewelry. Like the sketching process, the customer must approve the model, this time in writing. This is your last chance to make any changes to the design of the piece. Since this wax provides a detailed model of the ring, you will see exactly what the finished ring will look like. We can even place stones in the wax settings to give a more complete idea of what it will look like.
  • IV. "Lost Wax Casting"
Lost wax casting is a very old technique used by Mayan Indians centuries ago. A more advanced version of the process is used today to create almost all jewelry in the United States and Europe. This process involves several steps that, in turn, loose the wax model and replace it with metal. First, the wax model has wax sprues attached to it. These sprues allow the melted wax to escape after it has been "lost." Then, the model is invested. This is the process of surrounding the wax with a plaster-like substance called investment. The difference between investment and normal plaster is that investment, when heated to temperatures in excess of 1350 degrees Fahrenheit, will not burn or crack, and it will slightly expand to fill the crevices of the wax model. After the investment has been used to create a solid shell, or flask around the piece, the burnout process begins. In this process, the temperature is raised by increments to melt the wax and allow it to flow out of the flask. This is when the wax is "lost." Even after the wax has melted out, a residue is left behind. The oven is heated to 1350 degrees Fahrenheit, well beyond the maximum melting point of wax. After the residue turns to gas and escapes from the flask, the oven is gradually returned to a temperature between 1000 and 800 degrees. In the end, this process takes around 12 hours. The flask, with the wax completely burned out, is now ready to accept the molten metal. During the process of alloying, one or more metals are mixed with the precious metal of the piece to provide a sturdy base for the piece. The solid metals are weighed out, put in a crucible, and heated and mixed until liquefied. The mixture of metal is a very precise calculation that is reached through a formula. The formula is different, depending on the types of metal and what mixture is desired. In the Metal Casting process, the molten metal is poured into the spaces within the flask that the wax once occupied using vacuum assistance. It cools, and then is removed from the flask.
  • V. Finishing
The final cast piece is not yet a thing of beauty. It must be cleaned up and polished until it shines. After the initial cleaning and polishing, the craftsman fashions the precious metals to hold any gemstones that go into the new piece of custom jewelry. After all of the stones are set, appliques and texture are added, and the piece is again polished and ultrasonically cleaned and steamed.
  • VI. Presentation
In the end, the finished piece of custom jewelry is presented to you. You now have your one-of-a-kind custom piece that related your ideas and styles and is hand made for you using the finest precious metals and gemstones.
